DOT/CDL Exams in Morristown

The U.S. Department of Transportation requires that any individual applying for or renewing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must pass a DOT physical exam at least every two years. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates the physical exam for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. A DOT physical helps determine if a driver is physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate a CMV.

Dr. Case is National Registry Certified and has been performing CDL/DOT exams since 2015. Our office, Morris Spine & Sport, is conveniently located just off of Interstate 287 in Morristown, NJ. We strive to be driver-friendly by having appointment availability within 48 hours of your call to us.

A chiropractor cannot give direct clearance for known diabetes. The patient needs to bring a recent note from his/her treating doctor confirming diabetes is well-controlled so CDL is not contraindicated.

At Morris Spine & Sport we have family members who are Teamsters (Local 633 and Local 251), so we understand how important these exams are for you!

Preparing for Your Appointment

Please wear loose clothing for your exam. We ask that you drink a glass of water and come in with a full bladder, as you’ll need to provide a urine sample.

What to Bring:

  • Your driver’s license or other form of photo ID
  • Contact lenses or eyeglasses, if you wear them
  • A hearing aid, if applicable
  • Medical records
  • A list of medications, including strength and dosage, for both prescription and over-the-counter drugs
  • A copy of your most recent stress test (for heart conditions)
  • A copy of your most recent sleep test result (for sleep apnea)
  • Contact information, including names, phone and fax numbers for all your physicians

What to Expect

You’ll be asked to complete a one-page medical history that details past illnesses, diseases that run in your family, and your overall health.

Once you’ve provided your medical history, our team will review that information, discuss any medical conditions you may have, and perform a basic urinalysis test. As part of the exam, Dr. Case will:

  • Measure your height and weight
  • Take your blood pressure and pulse
  • Test your range of motion

  • Examine your eyes and ears
  • Perform a hernia test
  • Check your breathing

Following your exam, Dr. Case will electronically send your results to the National DOT Registry. You will be provided copies of your DOT Medical Exam Report and DOT Medical Card.

A DOT physical at Morris Spine & Sport costs $105 for an individual, or if there are five or more drivers in the same company, the cost is $95/each. You can pay by cash, company check, or credit card.

Who is Required to Have a CDL?

The US Department of Transportation requires drivers of specific types of commercial vehicles to have CDL. While this is a Federal program, the list of required vehicles that would require a person to have a CDL can vary slightly from state to state.

For example, New Jersey (where we are located) states “Any vehicle having a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) or gross combination weight of 26,001 pounds (13 tons) or more, whichever is greater, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds (5 tons), whichever is greater” requires that the driver possess a valid CDL license.

Other situations that require a valid CDL would include:

  • A vehicle that is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver
  • A vehicle that is designed to transport 9 to 15 persons, including the driver, if the vehicle is used to transport such persons for hire on a daily basis to and from places of employment
  • A vehicle that displays a hazardous material placard or is used in transporting hazardous materials and is required to be placarded.

And, as with most rules, there are some exceptions. Here are a few:

  • Privately owned recreational vehicles
  • Farmers hauling their products and equipment within 150 miles of their farms
  • Firefighters operating official fire equipment
  • Operators of rescue and first aid vehicles
  • Taxi drivers
  • Ride-sharing van drivers
  • Civilian operators of military equipment
  • Operators of construction equipment that is not used on public roadways.
